Okay, I'm a bit behind on my movie watching. That happens when you have two small kids and no current babysitter. Because of that, I watched Blood Diamond just last night on pay per view. I have to tell everyone who hasn't seen this movie how important it is to watch. Based on the struggles of the natives of Sierra Leone in the early nineties and the life of a cynical diamond smuggler, it shows how the mining of diamonds to finance conflicts leads to tradegy.
I used to judge a movie by whether it made me so emotional that I cried whether that be with joy or sadness. It hasn't happened in a very long time. There haven't been many movies of late that I could highly recommend. In this movie I cried for all reasons. It should have received all the Oscars it was nominated for, in my humble non-movie critic opinion.
You will never look at buying diamonds the same way again.
In addition, I encourage you all to visit the website www.leonardodicaprio.org for all the information you could possibly need about climate change and other incredibly important environmental facts. It's an amazing website. To be honest, I've never been a big fan (except of his role as Jack Dawson in Titanic) until now. As an anthropologist with a joint degree in International Development as well as Ecotourism, environmentalism has always been part of my life. DiCaprio, with his foundation and celebrity is doing everything I wish I could.
